About BBC 1Xtra

Listen online to the internet radio of BBC Radio 1Xtra live, which is the sister station of BBC Radio 1. Launched in 2002 when the growing popularity of underground music forced BBC Radio 1 to start a separate station focusing on the line of urban dance and rhythmic contemporary music. The target audience is slightly younger than the parent station's, so the nearly 1 million weekly listeners are mainly from the under 30 age group. The radio's playlist lines up the latest music from a very diverse genre and subgenre selection, mainly from the so-called black music, so hip-hop, R&B, house, drum&bass, garage, afrobeat, dancehall and soca are aired. 1Xtra's unbeatable musical palette is supervised by Dotty, DJ Target, MistaJam, Snoochie Shy, Trevor Nelson and David Rodigan.

Sideman quits 1Xtra over BBC’s use of racist word in news report
Sideman has left 1Xtra with immediate effect following the BBC using a racist slur in a news report. The 1Xtra presenter announced his departure from the station on social media, saying it felt like “a slap in the face to our community”. It happened after the N-word was used in a report about a racially aggravated attack in Bristol, broadcast by Points West and the BBC News Channel. In a video posted on Instagram, Sideman said: “This is an error in judgement where I can’t just smile with you through the process and act like everything is okay. “I’m happy working with organisations until we all get it right, but this feels like more than getting it wrong. The action and the defence of the action feels like a slap in the face to our community...More >>

What does the BBC’s Annual Plan say about Radio?
OPINION: The BBC is required to publish its annual plan each year. Just as with every broadcaster, however – and every industry – this year’s is atypical. Even when the COVID crisis abates, life will never be the same again. My notes here focus largely on radio, but it is worth citing the general headlines from the report, which bear out Ofcom’s latest research published yesterday: “As social distancing began in the UK in the third week of March, pan-BBC reach among adults peaked at 94%. That is: 94% of the British public used the BBC that week. 86% of young adults aged 16-34 used the BBC that week, up from 77% the week before”...More >>
