Charlie Higson joins Scala Radio for new series

Actor, comedian, author and former singer Charlie Higson is to host a new series entitled ‘The Playlists’ on Scala Radio. Known widely as one the creators, writers and actors of The Fast Show, Charlie co-produced BBC Radio 4’s spoof series Down the Line, has also appeared in ITV’s Broadchurch, and in the 1980s featured in band, The Higsons. For his new five-part series, Charlie will be sharing samples of curated classical music playlists that have helped him find the right words and set the atmosphere for writing over the years.

DJ Spoony to present Classical Garage on Scala Radio

Former Radio 1, 5 Live and Kiss presenter DJ Spoony is joining Bauer’s classical station Scala Radio to present a four-part series. Spoony’s Classical Garage will start on 9th June in the Sunday 1-3pm slot on the station and will be repeated on Tuesday evenings. Bauer says the show will ‘explore the trailblazing DJ’s passions for classical music in Sport, Film and TV as he plays an eclectic range of artists including Beethoven, Wookie, Vivaldi and Twister’. Greg James and James Purnell sign up for Radio Festival

The Radio Festival will include sessions from BBC Radio 1 breakfast show presenter Greg James, and the BBC’s Director of Radio and Education James Purnell. Other new sessions announced today are from Google News’ Brenda Salinas and Katy Leeson of Social Chain. James Purnell will be joining RadFest to share his thoughts on the importance of treasuring radio amidst significant change in the industry and in people’s listening habits.

Simon Mayo to speak at 2019 Radio Festival

The first speaker for this year’s Radio Festival, taking place in London next month, has been announced as Simon Mayo. The event on Monday 13th May at the British Library is organised by the Radio Academy and is part of a cross-industry ‘Radio Audio Week’. This year’s festival theme is ‘The New Age of Audio’. Bauer boss calls for collaboration and respect in radio

Bauer Media UK’s CEO Paul Keenan has called for the whole radio industry to unite so that the sector can continue to prosper, saying there’s never been a better time in commercial radio. He was speaking in the opening session at this year’s RadioDays Europe event in Lausanne, Switzerland – where he also revealed that 40% of Bauer’s streaming of radio in the UK comes from smart speakers.

Major national marketing plan starts for Scala Radio

Simon Mayo, Angellica Bell and Mark Kermode are the stars of a new national marketing plan for Scala Radio. The creative will be focused upon ‘Classical Music for Modern Life’ targeting the station’s core audience of ‘cultural explorers’ passion for music. The campaign has several creative executions inspired by the Scala filter of 70% familiar and 30% surprise.

Bauer launches Scala Singles Chart on Scala Radio

A new classical music chart has launched on Scala Radio – the Scala Singles Chart countdown – each Saturday at 10am. The Top 20, compiled by the Official Charts Company, reveals the most streamed classically inspired songs from the past week. The Official Scala Singles Chart is based on classically influenced tracks, including music from the classical genre, plus orchestral versions of popular music.

Simon Mayo launches Scala Radio on DAB digital radio

Bauer’s latest radio service, Scala Radio, launched as planned at 10am on Monday 4th March 2019. After a three minute history of the world in audio form, Simon Mayo welcomed listeners to the exciting new sound of Scala Radio, and quoted Alan Fluff Freeman by saying “Greetings music lovers”. The first music to be played was Prelude to Act 1 from the opera Carmen by Bizet, followed by Dvorak and a string quartet version of Daft Punk’s Get Lucky.

Disney to sponsor Simon Mayo’s Scala Radio show

Simon Mayos mid-morning show on Scala Radio will be sponsored by Disney for the first six months. Other sponsors getting involved with the digital station from launch include AJ Bell, Bensons for Beds, Davidstow Cheddar, Emerald Waterways, Kilimanjaro Live Ltd promoting Andrea Bocelli & Hans Zimmer, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Salisbury International Arts Festival, Sandals Resorts, and Royal Historic Palaces.

KISS and Hits Radio join up for BRIT Awards show

KISS and Hits Radio will be broadcasting live from the BRITs this year with presenters from both networking joining together for a special show. ‘Live at the BRITs’ returns as a three hour show broadcast from 7-10pm on Wednesday evening. Hits Radio’s Sarah Jane Crawford and KISS’ new signing Tyler West will join to host the programme that will feature interviews with some of the event’s performers and nominees, as well as the biggest tracks from this year’s BRIT nominees.
