Opinion: RadioToday industry predictions for 2020

One thing is for sure – radio is changing at an incredible pace. Keeping up with emerging products and making full use of smart technology is key. But whilst the art of ‘input’ is changing, the ‘output’ has remained fairly static for many decades. Listeners can still hear a friendly voice on the radio at all hours of the day – the major difference is where the voice is located and when they were recorded. Katy Johnston to replace Garry Spence on Capital Scotland Drive

Garry Spence has just announced his replacement on Capital Scotland Drive ahead of his move to Cylde 1 to host the same show. The Capital show will be hosted by Katy J, who already co-hosts the programme alongside Garry. The 24-year-old from Aberdeen has been on the show for the last few months and goes solo from January 2nd. Speaking about her brand new Capital Scotland Drive show, Katy J said: “I can’t wait to get started – it’s a total dream come true! I have listened to Capital for years and love the station. I’m buzzing to get stuck in and share all the exciting things we’ve got planned for the new show!” ...

Roman Kemp makes appearance at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball

Last night a video message from Roman Kemp was played out at Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with the crowd shouting out “TEAM ROMAN!”. Fans in the audience were surprised to see a message from Roman, who, at the time the video played out, was in the final 4 of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! Roman recorded a special message for Capital listeners before he went into the jungle on the off-chance he made it this far in the show. The message played out on the big screens of the O2 to the 16,000 crowd. Capital’s Will Manning asked the crowd: “Who wants Roman Kemp to win tomorrow night?” ...

£850,000 raised at Global’s Make Some Noise gala

A number of presenters from Global’s radio brands hosted the Make Some Noise annual charity gala at London’s Finsbury Square on Monday. The event raised £850,000 for charity, as music artists including Robbie Williams, Tom Walker and Freya Ridings took to the stage to perform live in front of almost 500 special guests. Global united all its radio brands for the event – Heart, Capital, Smooth, Classic FM, LBC, Radio X, Capital XTRA and Gold – to help children and young people living with illness, disability or lack of opportunity.

It was Capital v BBC Radio 1 in the Celebrity Jungle

Capital’s Roman Kemp and BBC Radio 1’s Adele Roberts got their just desserts on I’m A Celebrity last night when they took part in their first bush tucker trial. OnTheRadio reports the pair had both been nominated by the public to do the trial called Just Desserts, which involved eating all sorts of nasty things. It seems Roman’s dad Martin voted for his son’s nomination as he tweeted: “Just voted for my boy to eat kangaroo bo***cks..That’ll show him!!” ...

Radio presenters Roman Kemp, Kate Garraway, Adele Roberts and Ian Wright are being tipped to appear on this year’s series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, which starts next weekend. The Sun lists the four as part of it’s rumoured line-up for the ITV reality show. Global announces the return of Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball

The first acts for Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball 2019 were announced by Roman Kemp on the breakfast show on Monday morning, with more to be announced during the week. DJ Jax Jones, Liam Payne, Aitch, isLauv, Jonas Blue, Ava Max, Young T & Bugsey, and Rita Ora are on the line-up so far for the two-night event in December. Zoe Ball has lost another 364,000 listeners to her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show in the latest radio listening figures from RAJAR. It means more than a million weekly listeners have switched off since she took over the breakfast show from Chris Evans in January. RAJAR Q3 2019: Regional and local radio facts and figures

The big stories from the regions are that Heart has increased its audience despite rolling out a national breakfast show, and Greatest Hits Radio stations are taking a beating under their new names. Global - For the Heart brand, overall, it has seen an increase in listeners since taking its breakfast show national. It now has 9.8m weekly reach compared with 9.7m last quarter and 9.6m last year. Global’s Make Some Noise Day raises over £4m

The total from Global’s Make Some Noise Day stands at over four million pounds – at £4,097,325 raised in just one day. Staff from Global stations all over the UK took part in fundraising activities, from Jamie Theakston cycling from Edinburgh to London, Kate Garraway appearing in five West End Shows in one day, and Roman Kemp travelling 1,000 miles around the UK without money or use of his phone.
