RAJAR Q3 2019: London and national brands round-up

Zoe Ball has lost another 364,000 listeners to her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show in the latest radio listening figures from RAJAR. It means more than a million weekly listeners have switched off since she took over the breakfast show from Chris Evans in January. BBC Radio 1 launches a national on-air treasure hunt

BBC Radio 1 revealed a new on-air competition this morning in which listeners are invited to take part in a national treasure hunt. Radio 1’s Treasure Hunt will kick off at 7.30am on Thursday 24th October on Breakfast, when a Golden Ticket will be hidden in four different locations around the UK. Greg James will gradually reveal clues about their whereabouts throughout the show. The first listener to find one of the Golden Tickets will win a pair of tickets to Radio 1’s Big Weekend, Reading & Leeds and Glastonbury Festivals. 1Xtra Live event cancelled after Police incident

BBC Radio 1Xtra cancelled its Live event in Birmingham on Saturday night after a man was slashed during a backstage incident. West Midlands Police tweeted about the situation, saying the Arena Birmingham alerted them to an assault which took place in the backstage area at 10pm on Saturday. They said: “It’s understood that a man sustained a slash wound during the assault. He was treated by on-site medical staff and did not require hospital treatment.”

Radio 1 joins European dance music radio simulcast

BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac will host the first hour of an 7-hour dance show which is being simulcast across 8 radio stations in 7 European countries next month. The show will run from 7pm till 2am on Friday 11th October, with Radio 1 joining forces with Sweden’s SR P3, WDR 1Live and RBB Fritz in Germany, Belgium’s VRT Studio Brussel, RTÉ 2fm in Ireland, Radio France Mouv and NPO 3FM in The Netherlands. The BBC says the show will have an audience of more than 18 million listeners, who will hear ‘exclusive mixes’ and ‘interviews from the biggest UK acts’.

Union JACK introduces live breakfast radio show with Adam English

Union JACK is launching a live breakfast show each weekday morning with Student Radio Awards winner Adam English. The station says Adam will be the youngest national breakfast show host in the UK, and The Full English will be the first live show on the station since it launched in 2016. Adam was awarded the Best Male winner at the Student Radio Award 2018 and presented a one-off show on BBC Radio 1 following his win. BBC Radio 1Xtra announces shake up to weekend schedule

BBC Radio 1Xtra has unveiled changes to its weekend schedule to take effect this autumn. • Former 1Xtra Resident Nadia Jae will take on the Weekend Breakfast show • Sideman will host a brand new show in the Saturday lunchtime slot • Sundays on the station will become home to 1Xtra Old Skool Nadia Jae will take the reins on 1Xtra’s Weekend Breakfast show (6-10am) from mid-October. Nadia, who joined the station in 2018 as part of 1Xtra’s Residency, will be bringing plenty of fun and energy to the morning slot, along with the best R&B bangers and a healthy serving of tea to get listeners through the weekend.

Latest Rajar data (Q2 2019, 1 April - 23 June 2019) shows Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra have drawn in more listeners each week. BBC Radio 1 had a weekly reach of 10.56 million listeners aged 10+, an increase from 10.18m last quarter and 10.25m last year. BBC Radio 1Xtra also saw increases this quarter, with 1.17 million weekly listeners (10+) up on 1.13m last quarter and 1.11m last year. Zoe Ball has lost more than three quarters of a million listeners to her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, according to the latest audience research from RAJAR. The show’s reach is down 781,000 quarter-on-quarter to 8.266m for the three months survey period up to the 23rd June 2019. In Q1/19 she had 9.047m listeners; in Q2/2018 Chris Evans reached 9.038m. Radio 2’s audience at breakfast is now the lowest its been since Q3/2010, when Evans was fairly new in the job.

Arielle Free to host weekend early breakfast at Radio 1

DJ and TV presenter Arielle Free is joining BBC Radio 1 permanently to host weekend early breakfast show starting on Friday 6th September.
