Entries now open for ARIAS radio industry awards

The Audio & Radio Industry Awards 2018 are now open for entries ahead of the event in Leeds on October 18th. Organised by The Radio Academy and supported by LeedsBID (Business Improvement District), the awards will be returning for the third year to the First Direct Arena in Leeds where the winners will be unveiled.

The annual digital radio event, Drive to Digital, will see Bob Shennan, Dee Ford and Margot James address delegates this year. Drive to Digital 2018, proudly sponsored by Arqiva, is a major annual event for the wider radio industry. This year the event will focus on ‘The future of radio’ with significant contributions to the debate from broadcasters, Government and the supply chain.

Radio scores as fans enjoy World Cup ‘feelgood factor’

With England’s World Cup opening game becoming the most-watched programme of the year so far, radio coverage seems on course to hit new heights too. BBC Radio 5 Live and TalkSport are both broadcasting all the tournament’s games and, although figures are not yet out, report that listeners have been engaging more than ever with their shows.

Lauren Laverne to broadcast from Sage Gateshead

Lauren Laverne will broadcast her BBC Radio 6 Music show live from Sage Gateshead next weekend as part of the Great Exhibition of the North. Lauren’s show will feature Leeds DJ Nightmares on Wax, who will take charge of the tunes for regular Friday feature Desert Island Disco.

2018 New York Radio Festivals winners announced

Two of the five top ‘Grand Awards’ of the New York International Radio Festivals have gone to the UK this year, thanks to the BBC and TBI Media. The BBC won in the Best Digital Special Event category for putting on BBC Radio 1 Vintage for the station’s 50th birthday last year, whilst TBI Media took home the prize for its Born This Way documentary made for BBC Radio 2.

Kylie Minogue to headline BBC Radio 2 event

BBC Radio 2 has announced Kylie Minogue will headline its annual Live in Hyde Park event this year. Other confirmed acts include Carrie Underwood, All Saints, Rita Ora, Lenny Kravitz, The Band of Love and Manic Street Preachers. 50,000 people are expected to attend on Sunday 9th September.

Planet Rock to launch Americana music radio show

Planet Rock is launching a brand new show focusing on Americana music presented by Loz Guest. Called ‘Stateside’, the show will look at a whole range of Americana music ranging from heritage acts such as the Allman Brothers, Ry Cooder, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and taking in contemporary Americana artists with a home on the Planet Rock playlist, such as Blackberry Smoke and Cadillac Three.

Pete Mitchell to return with new Virgin Radio shows

Former Virgin 1215 breakfast presenter Pete Mitchell is returning to the brand, with a new history of music documentary series for Wireless Group’s Virgin Radio. Pete’s monthly show ‘Revolutions in Music’ starts this weekend, and will explore how popular music has reflected changing youth culture and politics over the decades.

The first nine inductees into the new Digital Radio Hall of Fame have been announced. The nine individuals were judged to have made an outstanding contribution to the success of digital radio over the last 20 years as digital radio pioneers and innovators.

Sheree Murphy and Ritchie Neville join Hits Radio

Former Emmerdale actress Sherree Murphy and boy band singer Ritchie Neville are among the presenters on the Hits Radio weekend schedule. Sherree teamed up with Wes Butters for her first show on the station this morning 9am-12noon, while Ritchie – who was in the group 5ive – hosts Hits Throwback, which airs on Sunday nights 7-10pm playing music from the 90s and 00s.
